Dr. Mentz's Latest Advances in
Plastic Sugery
Dr. Mentz, a founding partner at Aesthetic Center
for Plastic Surgery has partnered with Dr. Amado
Ruiz to advance the science of plastic surgery.
Dr. Ruiz is a full time board certified plastic
surgeon dedicated solely to research. He and Dr.
Mentz have published and presented more than 80
papers and presentations in more than 10 countries
since 2003. Recent topics can be reviewed in the
articles section. Some popular topics have been:
New Advances in Abdominal Etching
and Pectoral Etching 2004-2005
Since introducing Abdominal Etching in 1993,
Dr. Mentz has also presented improved techniques
for soft etching, used for females and less muscular
men, and pectoral etching, used for defining a
more muscular appearance in the male chest.
Less Pain in Tummy Tucks 2003-2005
Dr. Mentz and Dr. Ruiz introduced the use of
the pain pump in abdomenoplasty in 2003. The pain
pump uses local anesthetic to numb the tummy for
5 to 6 days after surgery and reduced substantially
the amount of pain medicine necessary and patients
were out of bed twice as fast. This was a great
advance in abdominoplasty because it reduces pain,
patients were less dependant on pain medicines,
and were out of bed quicker. These things greatly
reduce the risks and improve safety for this operation.
Isolagen 2002-2004
Dr. Mentz was the only US plastic surgeon who
performed the phase II and III FDA studies for
the use of Isolagen. Isolagen is an advanced technique
which uses the patients own live fibroblasts for
wrinkle filling. The produce awaits final FDA
approval in the US, but is available in Europe
presently.
Better Facelifts 2004-2005
Dr. Mentz and Dr. Ruiz have lectured extensively
and await publication of their paper outlining
advanced techniques for facelifting. They measured
internal tensions and movement of facial soft
tissues (the jowls) during facelifts in order
to define the best techniques. Their findings
suggested a special midface manouver can greatly
improve lifting in the cheek.
New Uses for Radiesse 2005
Dr. Mentz and Dr. Ruiz will present this year
several special uses for Radiesse. Radiesse is
FDA approved for wrinkle filling, but new used
for facial skeletal refinement and reconstruction
are being introduced by the two doctors. Bony
defects in the brow, nasal assymetry, small chins
and other assorted suttle defects were improved
with a simple injection.
Less Painful Breast Augmentation
2005
Dr. Mentz is currently working with ACPS using
a small radiofrequency device in hopes of reducing
pain after breast implant surgery. The study is
currently underway and the results are pending.
